I can't speak to his effort to learn the system (grasping is a different bag). But he was definitely out of shape (an indictment of Toronto's team conditioning) and couldn't be relied upon for monster minutes (if his early play warranted them but it didn't).
I wouldn't be surprised if he gave the Bs a last chance to match and they politely declined.
If the Bs could've had him for $3.5 or less, I think he would've been a decent pick up. He wasn't nearly as bad the player he looked like at times. But the rough start killed his confidence and it took awhile to get back. Still, he was playing a pretty reliable 3rd pairing role for the last half of the playoffs for the Cup champs and let's not forget he was tied for the team lead in scoring by D (0-11--11) with the German. A full training camp and indoctrination into Claude's system (plus a reset on his confidence button) would have surely produced a better player than the one we saw in April.
But not for 4-and-a-quarter. Thanks Tomas, happy trails.
I don't think they're looking at Corvo as a replacement. More of a complimentary piece. Hunwick will be looked at to bounce back from his injury and step up (he was good to go halfway through playoffs buy Claude wasn't messing with the D).
