MIKE'S LEFT HIGH & SCI. 8TH-GRADE TEST SLUMP DENTS

EIGHTH-GRADE science test scores sank 8 percentage points in the past two years - a blemish on Mayor Bloomberg's ballyhooed education record, new statistics show. Last year, 45% of middle-school students passed state science exams, down from the 53% mark in 2002 moncler outerwear, when Bloomberg won control of the city's schools. High school students did even worse: Only 7% of city students passed physics exams, and 18% passed chemistry Regents. Fourth-graders fared the best, with 61% of them making the grade on science exams last year. During the mayoral campaign Moncler Jackets Men, Bloomberg touted the improvement in city schools as one of his crowning achievements in his first term. He frequently cited 10-point jumps in fourth-grade reading and math scores, while vowing to improve eighth-grade scores, which dipped two points in each subject. Critics charged that the Bloomberg administration overemphasized reading and math tests, designing the curriculum and tougher promotion standards to ensure that standardized scores would improve and underperforming kids would be left back. Councilwoman Eva Moskowitz (D-Manhattan) echoed those critics yesterday, saying at a public hearing that science education has suffered second-class status for decades - and educators agreed. "The scores are too low. There is no question," said Julia Rankin, the Education Department's point person for science. Ideally, all schools should teach science on a daily basis, she said www.discountmonclersaleusa.com, but was unsure if any schools are meeting that goal. "It's not realistic because we do have competition with ELA [the English Language Arts test] and math," Rankin admitted. Starting in 2006, there will be consequences for schools with sagging science scores - they will be labeled failing under the federal No Child Left Behind law. klucadamo
