2011-2012 UMass Basketball

Postby ds bruce robertson » Tue Nov 15, 2011 6:36 pm

The Sons of #14 sprint out to an impressive 2-0 start and already hold the #18 spot in the RPI. Coach Prodigal finally ditches Vance Walberg and the DDM, adds Chaz Williams (best player in the state by far) and everything is lined up perfectly for a run to the tournament. Can't wait to laugh so hard after UMass resumes it's rightful dominance over BC. It'll even be funnier in like 4 years when UMass is in the top 20 in the BCS, selling out Gillette and the ACC realizes that nobody in Boston cares about BC and ditches them for their Big Brother in Amherst.

UMass will go 2-0 vs. BC and Miami and by a combined score of at least 20. Mostly because UMass is going to beat BC by 25+.

maybe UMass will be less irrelevant than BC this year. Looking at their OOC schedule, 3 games against ACC squads give UMass a chance to bump that RPI up.
The Orangemen are just a rock-solid, consistent winner that hasn't suffered a losing season since 1968-69.

82 - 46. Worst drubbing in the history of the UMass - BC rivalry. Was sincerely feeling bad for BC at the end. I don't hate them in real life as much as I do on here and they were so overmatched out there and you could just feel the deflating despair in Conte. Overhearing the 6 or so BC fans around me leads me to believe there's going to be a lot of friends and family type nights at Conte this year, no matter how many Groupon deals they offer.

Not much in the way of overly impressive opponents so far, but 4-0 after 4 games is as good as you can hope to be. They're doing what pretty good teams do by having a +22.8 average margin of victory so far. There aren't any new causes for concern to this point but there probably will be after tomorrow's game in the Bahamas against Florida St.

First place in the A-10 and, more importantly, looking like a legit D1 team. I like where this is heading (finally). Refuse To Lose

Lunardi has them in his bracket this week as the A-10 auto bid since they are tied for first with a higher RPI being his tie breaker. He's got them as a #14 seed. Current RPI is 51, and only 1 top 50 win doesn't get them in as an at large right now. They still have top 50 games vs. Xavier and @ Temple. They also have to avoid losing to RPI 253 Rhode Island, who UMass plays twice.

UMass’ future gets brighter with addition of Derrick Gordon

With Xavier retooling its roster and Temple on its way to the Big East, other Atlantic 10 teams finally may have an opportunity to compete for a league championship the next couple years.

UMass took a big step toward that goal Friday when it landed a commitment from one of the nation's best available transfers.

Derrick Gordon, a 6-foot-2 combo guard who averaged 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds at Western Kentucky last season, announced via Twitter that he'll enroll at UMass in the fall. Gordon chose the Minutemen over A-10 rivals Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's and will have three years of eligibility remaining after he sits out the 2012-13 season.

"This was a long and hard decision for me...but now it's over," Gordon tweeted. "It's official I will be going to UMass!!!!....#UMassNation"

For a UMass team that reached the NIT semifinals last year and returns its five leading scorers, the addition of Gordon only adds to the enthusiasm about the future of the program. UMass' best player, Chaz Williams, will be a senior when Gordon becomes eligible in 2013, giving the Minutemen potentially one of the nation's best backcourts that season.

The excitement about Gordon stems from his success as a freshman at Western Kentucky. He helped lead the Hilltoppers on an improbable run to the NCAA tournament, erupting for 25 points and 15 rebounds in the Sun Belt tournament against Arkansas Little-Rock and scoring 12 against Kentucky in opening round of March Madness.
