If the officer had a taser on him at the time, when he originally walked onto the scene and saw the dog then he should have prepared it and made it readily available to use before making calls back to the dispatch. Yet, if you re-watch the video, the cop had the gun holstered as the dog rapidly approached therefore it forced him to make a split second decision to save himself from serious injury. It was not pre-meditated, yet instead, reactive. While this is a brutal act, because the officer was completely under the right to defend himself, I don’t believe any charges or leave of duty should be put forth upon him.

You really can’t defend that cop shooting the dog. It is part of the cop’s job to react in dangerous situations without hurting the innocent. Two cops should be able to put a dog into submission without shooting it. If they both tried they could have rounded that dog up and gotten it somewhere else while that dude laying on the concrete got cared for. The facts of the matter are:
1. The officer stood and assessed whether the dog was hostile or not. He told the lady to step back as a precaution.
2. The dog bit the lady the moment she even moved (spare me the semantics of it just being her pants leg because it was still an aggressive, hostile gesture).
3. The dog then immediately turns around and runs towards the officer.
4. The officer literally only had like, two seconds to determine what to do. Either get attacked or prevent the dog from biting him, any other officers, and any other bystanders.
He made the right call. Dog attacks can be vicious. I don’t give a shit how cute and cuddly a dog looks. Look the shit up on Google or YouTube and you’ll see. No cops should have to get bitten just to save a few PETA-loving, bleeding hearts from crying.
And to anyone who suggested the dog was just being playful, you’re a fucking moron.

i rescued a pitbull mix a year ago. i volunteer every week at an animal shelter. this video is so brutal and sad that I am infinitely sorry that I watched it. but i watched it. the fault lies with the homeless man, not the NYPD officer. first, the dog needs to be leashed. i know it’s a lot to ask of a homeless dude, but then the answer is DON’T ALLOW HOMELESS GUYS TO OWN DOGS. second, pitbulls are strong animals. they can be taught to be aggressive or submissive. the misplaced stigma is that ALL pitbulls are aggressive, which is untrue but widely believed. unfortunately the officer had to make a split second decision to protect his own safety and the people around him. i’m positive that he did not enjoy doing this, and i’m positive he was saddened by the end result. but his job is to protect the citizens of NYC, not dog welfare. unfortunate as it is, the fault lies with the owner and no one else. so stop taking sides like dumbasses and assess how the situation came to be, not the outcome that was determined by a split decision of self-protection.
