Daily Mail – Banksy has used his latest piece of artwork in New York to criticize the ‘mediocre’ design of the new World Trade Center – and claim its construction is symbolic of the city losing its nerve. On Sunday, the artist posted an opinion piece on his website, ‘Better Out Than In,’ and said that his essay had been rejected by the New York Times. The latest addition to the collection which he describes as ‘an artist’s residency on the streets of New York’ is a wall mural in Greenpoint that reads: ‘This site contains blocked messages’ in reference to the op-ed he says was rejected. The artist has been in the city for a number of weeks now, leaving pieces of art in all five boroughs in a series called ‘Better Out Than In’. Among the most recent is an ‘alternative New York bumper slogan’ and graffiti paintings, the most recent of which is ‘Hell’s Kitchen’. Banksy titled the essay, ‘The biggest eyesore in New York is not the graffiti, argues Banksy, it’s under construction at Ground Zero.’ In the piece he renames the tower, ‘Shyscraper.’ The British artist goes on to argues that One World Trade is ‘a one thousand foot tall sign that reads – New York – we lost our nerve.’ ’It would be easy to view One World Trade Center as a betrayal of everyone who lost their lives on September 11th, because it so clearly proclaims the terrorists won,’ Banks writes in his rejected op-ed. ’Those 10 men have condemned us to live in a world more mediocre than the one they attacked, rather than be the catalyst for a dazzling new one.’ The elusive artist also states that: ‘One World Trade Center is a non-event. It’s vanilla. It looks like something they would build in Canada.’ While Banksy fever in New York is about to come to a close, the artist leaves hoping that New Yorkers ‘do something’ about the new World Trade Center.
Alright, seriously dude. Time to get the fuck out of our city. Get the fuck out of the country and head back to the UK. You’ve officially overstayed your welcome. The only people who give a shit about you are people who watched a documentary about you and think its cool and cultured to know about a graffiti artist. The type of people who feel like they’re impressing everyone at happy hour because they are talking about art. Nobody else gives a fuck about you painting a little boy on a wall. And absolutely nobody wants to hear your opinions on September 11th. It takes some serious fucking nerve to spend a month in this city exploiting us to promote your brand and your name, and then on your way out tell us that fucking Al Qaeda defeated us and we’ve lost our nerve. Bash the symbol of hope that we rebuilt where the towers used to be. Hey buddy - fuck yourself. I wonder whats more of a betrayal to the families of people who lost their lives that day in 2001 – a beautiful iconic building erected with a memorial on the same site the towers fell, or some cocksucker, self righteous graffiti artist proclaiming that Al Qaeda defeated us. You insensitive, self promoting, hipster shithead.
And I’m sure he’s just doing this to continue to stir the pot and garner more headlines. Specifically because of that Canada jab. That just screams “troll.” But either way, I don’t know whats worse – actually believing what he’s saying about New York and September 11th, or just saying it for publicity. Whichever it is, this dude may be the biggest piece of shit I’ve ever come across. Maybe now all you fucking idiot lemmings who jocked this dude when I first blogged about him will see him for what he really is. He’s not some anti-hipster, man of the people, against-all-art-snobs, like you think. He’s some self centered dickhead who thinks he’s played the whole art world. Its his shtick, and its played the fuck out.
Seriously dude, I speak for the people who don’t give a fuck about graffiti art and, if I may be so bold, I’d like to speak for the people who fought hard to return to normalcy after 9/11 – the terrorists most certainly did not win. We haven’t lost our nerve. We’ve bounced right back to being one of the crown jewels of America, so much so that little fuckboys like you want to come here to display your art. The way a goddam building looks does not define the people who refused to let the worst terrorist attack on American soil get the best of them. The shape and size of One World Trade Center does not represent the FDNY, NYPD and all the other first responders that stood up for this city that day. Doesn’t characterize the families who lost loved ones that day. After spending a month here, you’d think a guy would understand that its the spirit and the perseverance of the people who lived through that attack that refused to let Osama Bin Laden and his band of cowards win. But hey, if you don’t like the way the Freedom Tower looks, get the fuck out of New York, get the fuck out of America, and get back to scribbling on brick walls across the pond. We don’t want you here, you pessimistic, hopeless motherfucker.
