ESPN Ranks USA Women Over Brazil As A More Dramatic Sports Moment Than Kirk Gibson and Bill Buckner
So ESPN clearly freaked the fuck out yesterday and decided to do a knee-jerk “Top 10 Most Dramatic Sports Moments of all time” list which may actually turn out to be “The Most Dramatically Embarrassing List in the History of Lists”. Here’s the list from last night’s Sportscenter:
No. 10 – Duke over Kentucky – Shot from Laettner
No. 9 – Shot Heard Round the World - Giants win the pennant!
No. 8 - Kirk Gibson – I don’t believe what I just saw!
No. 7 – Immaculate Reception
No. 6 - Bill Buckner
No. 5 – USA Women rally to defeat Brazil.
No. 4 – Joe Carter homer for Toronto to win World Series
No. 3 – Bill Mazeroski homer for Pittsburgh to win World Series
No. 2 – NC State with Jimmy V
No. 1 – Miracle on Ice
To quote Angry Grandpa after the Casey Anthony verdict, WHAAAT!! Are you kidding me? Way to take a great game and make it 1000x’s bigger than it actually was. First of all it was only the quarterfinals. Second, you can’t possibly put women’s soccer on the same list with the 4 major sports, college hoops and Olympic Hockey. This is just insanity. Higher than Kirk Gibson, Bill Buckner and the Immaculate Reception? Who the fuck made this list, Tony DiCicco? Might want to relax over there at Bristol. Take a deep breath, as Herm Edwards would say, ESPN needs a “Don’t Press Send” button on their top 10 lists. Great game? Yes. Exciting? Sure. But should a women’s soccer game ever be ranked this high on the top 10 most dramatic moments in sports list?
Not even with Gus Johnson on the call…

Geez, I wonder what self-indulgent network is airing the next US Women’s World Cup game. You know if they didn’t have the World Cup rights they wouldn’t have aired the game highlights until the last 10 minutes of SportsCenter. Fuck ESPN.

For some reason Manzo actually seems decent with women’s soccer posts. fire him and bring him in as an outside analyst every 4 years
ESPN is just going to ignore the entire sport of boxing i see. sounds good. not like there are many famous boxing moments anyway. clearly the one-two combination of Megan Rapinoe to Abby Wambauch outdoes that of Joe Frazier and Mohammad whats-his-face. great job by the boys at bristol per usual
Great game yesterday, but this list physically upsets me.
We give women sports events those same bonus points we give women athletes. We love over ranking chicks.
It’s like we think they’ll fuck us.
ps
Kirk gibson was on the list? Bill mazeroski form like 40 years ago? What a list. I really enjoyed it…
We haven’t even won anything yet… that was a quarterfinal… wtf
whoever made the list obviously is going to be touting their authorship around the awesome Bristol bar scene
so this game is #5, but tyree’s catch isn’t even in the top 10? this is just ESPN trying to make this tournament look important so they can get higher ratings.
the criteria was obviously that elimination games and national team wins would have precedent above all else. we’re lucky Joe Carter even ranked higher than these chicks cuz the jays weren’t facing elimination. personally, gibson would be way higher on my list, but the dodgers beat the shit out of the A’s that series. they’d have won that series even if theylost that game.
If they’re going to put any soccer on that list at all, Donovan’s goal last year in the men’s world cup should be it. America!
they also ranked it #1 play of the weekend over jeter’s 3000th hit/5 for 5 performance.
And this is why I don’t watch ESPN anymore.
Also, since when do Gus and Raftery call soccer games?? Gus’ screaming and Raffy’s “ONIONS” should only be used for college bball
ITS WOMEN’S SOCCER!! That doesn’t pass up the Marlins v Astros game from last night. Get that shit out of here
Stevenwoj hit the nail on the head, case closed.
This is a travesty. More dramatic than the immaculate reception?
Of course they ranked it over 3000th hit. Jeter is the most overrated player ever. Yay for bloop singles.
SVP just crushed this list on his radio show and admitted ESPN are “douchey fagtards with tiny baby dicks”
wait, wait wait…. I agreed with Manzo. Is the world ending or is this the 2 minutes a day the broken clock is right?
[...] an instant classic. ESPN, perhaps a bit too dizzy on the euphoria of the moment, named it the fifth most dramatic (American) sports moment of all time (over the 1999 WWC final, among many other things). But, it’s New York Yankees captain Derek [...]
