Woody Johnson Wants To Trade Revis
CBS Sports – The New York Jets, fresh off an exhaustive hunt for new general manager John Idzik, will explore options to deal star corner Darrelle Revis this offseason, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Revis, whose contract voids after the 2014 season, is set to earn $6 million in 2013 (between salary and bonuses), and owner Woody Johnson has strong reservations about the ability to extend Revis’s deal, the sources said. Johnson has expressed his desire to attempt to land value for Revis now, rather than risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent a year from now, most likely seeking as much draft-pick compensation for him as possible. The Jets are very much in transition mode, they have cap issues moving forward and are trying to embark on a rebuilding process after firing former long-time general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Revis, who missed almost all of last season after suffering a torn ACL, engaged in a long holdout in 2010 that resulted in a contract extension that was more of a Band-Aid than anything else. Revis signed a seven-year deal then that voids to a four-year pact, thus making him an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season. The deal also precludes him being hit with the franchise tag or any other such mechanism. Johnson has made it very clear he would like to pursue a means to reap rewards for Revis now, sources said, and it is likely to be an immediate part of Idzik’s initial job duties.
Darrelle Revis is the only shred of real talent left on the Jets. The only value they’ve got. So while I’d hate to see him go, and as much as you hate to trade a guy who’s value is low due to injury, this makes sense. As bizarre as it feels to say, this decision by the Jets makes sense. Its a lot like the Mets trading RA Dickey or any other team that has been in rebuilding mode that has a seriously valuable chip. The Jets window is shut – completely shut. If they were in the market for a quarterback and had some young studs coming into their prime next year, I’d keep Revis and hope for a bounce back, shut down year and hope they could turn it all around like this year’s Vikings did. But none of that is happening. The Jets are going to be the exact same failure of a team next year and then Revis hits the market, where he’ll command money the Jets clearly won’t give him. Yes, trading him fresh of his ACL injury probably hurts his value – but ACL injuries just aren’t the death knell they used to be, and there’s a plethora of conditional picks and packages you can create for a player who’s performance is uncertain. Still gonna be worth a boatload of picks to someone who wants one of the best defensive players in the game.
PS – Woody Johnson needs to get the fuck out of the Jets operations. You hear his name so fucking much these days its nauseating. Woody didn’t want Tebow, Woody wants to trade Revis. It hurts everyone’s value every time he opens his mouth. Sit down and be quiet like all the successful owners in the league. Anytime your owner is in the papers or making the decisions you’re fucked. Hire guys you trust to take care of that and shut the fuck up.

He’ll go to Philly and be Nhamdi Asomugha 2.0
I am absolutely 100% for this trade to go down. Teams don’t build around cornerbacks. We already have Cro. We need a fucking offensive line and a quarterback. If you say you wouldn’t even consider trading revis for two first round draft picks you are outside your mind.
woody.
you do realize this is the same team they’ve had for the last 3 seasons right? Now all of a sudden you’re saying they have no talent while for the last 3 years you’ve been saying how great everybody is. Do you see why nobody takes jets fans seriously?
the fact that Rex Ryan has a job at this point is beyond logic.
NFL trades never work out. Best the jets will get is a #1 and maybe a #2. You HOPE that one of them will be half as good as Revis. More likely one will be a decent starter and one will be a bust.
Excluding brady, i would trade anybody on the pats for revis. Pipe dream, i know.
Uhhhh…..There was never a Nhamdi Asomugha 1.0
Two first round draft picks for an overrated CB coming off an ACL surgery? Are you dreaming?
just finding a team to take that contract, let alone give up a first round pick, will be close to impossible. Like you said no team is dumb enough to build around a corner… haha could you even imagine? that would almost be as dumb as giving a $58 million dollar contract to one of the worst QBs in the league
Woody needs to stop acting like Jerry Jones and let people with football knowledge makes these kind of decisions….STFU WOODY!!!
kfc – your ps is 100% right. thats the exact same problem we have with the sox…maybe boston and new york isnt so different after all. only difference is we nearly double the amount of championships new york has won going back to 2000.
whatthehell – im from boston and can see this team is alot different….LT, plaxico, holmes (when he gives a fuck), jenkins. ellis. edwards…all guys who at one time or another were a pro bowler
Gunner72 – moron – Gronk, Wilfork, Hernandez, Welker, Mayo? Get a clue bro.
Hey I hate the jets, I’m a Pats fan. No I don’t think they will get a #1 for him (I said a #1 and a #2, not two #1s) but I knew if I said they’ll get a #3 for him Jets fans will argue. My point was no matter what they get for him, it won’t be the same value as him, so may as well keep him.
The Yankees need to do the same thing with Cano ASAP. Kid can’t focus and is becoming a major problem. Get value where you can. Smartest thing I’ve heard come out of NYJ camp in years.
umm surfnturf, i dont know what league your watching but teams absolutley build around cornerbacks, its the second most important position in the league
edwardosanchez….I’m a Pats fan and I would trade anyone you mentioned for Revis except Gronkowski. Maybe Wilfork. But I’d trade Welker, Hernandez, or Mayo for Revis in 2 seconds.
i think they should trade for 6 more quarterbacks if they can
@wilburham, what team that is now successful built around a cornerback?
edwardo, yes i would trade any of them (welkers a free agent). the pats glaring weakness is secondary, if we were to have revis and signed talib it would instantly make our secondary a top 5 in the NFL. Our offense could do without any player other than brady and still score points, when the addition of addition of revis would drastically change the outlook of our defense. Its not even worth talking about.
and for the record, MLB (or LT) is the second most important position in the league…that’s why they’re called the quarterbacks of the defense you simpleton
Really? There’s still a thing as “Jet’s fans”?
1) whoever says not to build teams around strong corners clearly doesnt know football. the nfl is a passing league so as much as you want strong fast pass rushers in front, you need these guys to shut down the WR position thats gotten a lot easier with the rule changes 2) you are outside your mind if you think a team will trade its #1 draft pick for a guy coming off ACL injury. he’s worth a #2 and maybe, maybe a #4 if not less, unless of course its coming from a team with a plethora of stockpiled picks. he’s not going to fetch a boatload of picks because he’s unproven right now. All Day is the exception to guys coming off ACL injuries, not the rule 3) you’re PS is spot on KFC. but then again, he fits in perfectly with his loud mouth coach so why rock the boat?
The Jets window is closed? When the Hell was it opened? Also, I would not trade Gronk, Hernandez, Wilfork, Mayo, etc. for a CB coming off of a torn ACL, a healthy Revis is a different story.
@wilburham you do realize the best cb in history deion sanders bounced around from team to team and none of the teams he was on were built around him.. revis is expendable at this point coming off an acl injury.
There’s probably a huge trade market for a CB coming of a shredded knee who holds out every training camp in a contract dispute.
@surfnturf you do realize that the rules in the NFL have changed drastically in favor of the offense since deion sanders played…. corners and pass rushers are the most important positions on defense nowadays. and whoever said MLB is the most important position on D must be stuck in the 90′s. LB’s are no longer the big badass guys stuffing the line of scrimmage… they need to be quick enough to drop back into coverage to cover the likes of gronk. it’s like half you morons don’t even watch football.
all of you lemmings saying that corners are the way to build defenses now have still yet to name a SINGLE TEAM that has had success from building that way. so yea, you’re wrong
broncos built around champ bailey and look how that turned out for them? awful until peyton showed up. portis was so sweet in mile high
Just look at the two teams in the superbowl right now…what position is stronger? LB or CB? Yea, that’s what I thought
Anytime you’re in a 43 year rebuilding phase it makes sense to deal off injured overrated players for younger talent.
Hold on Sizzlindeals did the Broncos win something this year? I think you have a scoop there the rest of us missed buddy.
@emacker Revis overrated? pull your head out of your ass. Something’s gotta give with this Jets team and if Idzik can make a solid move to get a couple young guys or a combination of a player and a pick i’m all for it. always loved watching revis but they fucked this situation up so bad trading him is probably the only way to start fixing it.
sizzlindeals: The Broncos went just as far in this years playoffs as last years. Actually they won a playoff game last year
^With fucking Tebow at QB
@emacker, If you think Revis is overrated you’re out of you’ve clearly never seen him play. In 2011 opposing quarterbacks had a qb rating of 2.9 when throwing at him through the first 7 weeks. I understand people fearing the torn ACL, but you can’t deny that the man was a beast when healthy.
in what world is revis overrated? u guys are the same jackasses who claimed nambi as the best corner not to long ago. champ baily and cro are going to the probowl, niether are even in his league. its a torn acl not a leg amputation
“Hire guys you trust to take care of that and shut the fuck up.”
Dude, his front office is a joke. Of course he needs to give his input. The rest of the organization is run by idiots!
Woody Johnson is the reason Parcells bailed, reason why Belichick wouldn’t take over, and why Belichick tried to tell Mangenius not to take the job. He has cost the jets a lot with his meddling . Mangini was a good coach he stocked this team with young talent. To watch what has happened is sad
Did you just use the word “plethora” in a blog? I thought this site catered toward a 3rd grade reading level.
