Zack Greinke Admits He’s All About The Money And Doesn’t Care
Zack Greinke, reflecting on his signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason, didn’t mince words recently when addressing the motivating factor for his decision. Greinke, who signed a $147 million, six-year deal with Dodgers, says one thing held sway first and foremost: money. “I could play for the worst team if they paid the most,” Greinke said in an interview with CBSSports.com. “If the last-place team offers $200 million and the first-place team offers $10, I’m going to go for the $200 million no matter what team it was.” Greinke’s deal, completed in December, was the second-most lucrative in history for a pitcher, trailing only the $161 million deal CC Sabathiasigned with the New York Yankees in 2009. During his introductory news conference, Greinke had hinted at the reasons for a change in heart from signing with the Rangers, who he said had at one time been the favorite to gain his services. “But that changed there at the end,” said Greinke, the 2009 Cy Young Award winner with the Royals, before adding that money was “what it gets to at the end.” Greinke, in his interview with CBSSports.com, said he didn’t regret holding out despite previous offers by such teams as the Nationals as he bided his time waiting for free agency. “I wanted to see it,” Greinke said. “If it was going to be only one year for $1 million, I wanted to see for myself.”
Preach! Gotta get paid! I respect the shit out of this. Personally speaking, I think after a certain point, you have enough millions and it might be more worthwhile to sign with a team for other factors. But thats just me. After I made a zillion dollars I’d rather play for a winner than finish in last place every year.
But if you’re like Zack Greinke and don’t really give a fuck about that, then you absolutely should not be vilified for thinking this way. Get as much money as fast as you possibly can. No shame in that game, no matter what your profession is.

Credit for being honest!
cause greinke can at least single handedly win games himself. he doesnt give a fuck about any statistic besides era
The white Albert Haynesworth.
At least he’s honest, I respect that. I know some athletes that act like they are all about the team and claim to take pay cuts, when in fact they are just getting the money deferred to 2017 when they turn 40.
It’s annoying when people use a ridiculous hyperbole to justify themselves. Sure, $200 million vs. $10 is a pretty reasonable decision. But if it’s $200 million for the worst team vs. say $180-190 million to be on a contender? In that case you’re a selfish douchebag.
I wish that at my job I could have one dominate month and then a bunch of solid months and be the second highest paid person in the company for the year.
Cuz to a stoolie anything after 30 mil is irrelevant cuz we can appreciate life without being a greedy fucking asshole. But to a professional athlete your contract is pretty much a dick-measuring contest so god forbid the guy next to your locker has the same stats as you but gets paid a million more a year. I understand its a free-market and shit but I hope I would care about winning more then a lot of these guys. Winning is so fucking awesome it should be worth freeing up some more of a player’s team’s cap space so your team can get better. Plus endorsements increase.
It’s Greinke’s world and were all just living in it.
Eye of the Jew
Hey, at least he’s honest. Look at King Felix. Oh, really, you love Seattle? No one fucking loves Seattle. He’ll probably literally never pitch in a playoff game, but he’s $175M richer. He can always just trade himself to the Sox or Yanks in MLB2K to see what happens when you put up 200 IP and a sub-3 ERA on a good team.
He is honest, but also fucking stupid. When you play on a good team you have a lot more opportunity at Endorsements and Playoff Cash.
can’t pitch in a big market, they’ll hate him soon enough
@DPGB, yeah because taking $57 million over 5 years is the same as taking $72 million over 4. You dumb schmuck.
I have to side with Grienke on this one. The extra $10-$20 million will do he and his family much better then a trophy. And are the Dodgers really projected to be that bad?
Hello be on the DL with hangnails, hangovers then gout. Good work Magic.
Can’t say I disagree with him. Mental health counseling and psych pills are expensive.
I wander if he factored in the progressive income tax in California. I do not feel looking up exact figures but its like an added 12% income tax pushing his total rate close to 60%. Phil Mickelson was talking about leaving the state because of it.
DISGUSTING mindset. When you are gonna get paid huuuuge no matter who you sign for you owe it to the game, ie the fans and their kids to want to win. There ain’t no dollar sign in legacy. Compare with THAT speech by that great at Yankee Stadium. Clayton is America’s last hope.
